Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary stream that blends computer science and biology to analyze, test, and visualize data for biological and medical purposes. Bioinformatics is being recognized as one of the in-demand and career promising tracks, with a the vast spectrum of micro-specialties and a variety of applications in academic research and the industry including pharmaceutics and biotechnology. Speaking of the professional side of this stream, these 99 hours of expert-led training specialization was designed in collaboration with researchers, academics, and leads in the field from well-known and highly reputable entities. Therefore, students will have the opportunity to be exposed to theoretical and practical knowledge throughout hands-on training sessions. Hence, they are expected to acquire such market-based skills as well as to learn trendy use cases when interpreting them in a hands-on project to serve real purposes.

What will you learn

This cohort includes 99+ training hours to be covered over 16 weeks, using different instructional methods, led by Ph.D. holders and industrial leads in the niche.

Over 70% of this specialization is based on instructor-led training method of teaching, you will have the chance to engage with peers and direct contact with your teacher.

Enrolling in this specialization will take you on a learning path along 3 phases over 16 weeks, your first month full will let you gain the basics of the know-how of doing some analysis and program with python, moreover, to get a rooted understanding of the required molecular biology. Your journey next moves to learn the core concepts and use cases of bioinformatics, within the next 2-3 months of the spectrum, you will meet your teacher in weekly live sessions and follow ups with your teaching assistants. You will be weekly assigned a hands-on task to leverage the knowledge gained during these sessions. At the end of this phase, you must submit a capstone project which you will start working on it at the end of the second month of this cohort. Besides your capstone project, you'll also need to complete a final exam as a comprehensive post-assessment.

Phase I: Initial Courses

Python for Bioinformatics - Prerequisite course
  • Learn the foundation of Python programming
  • Get familiar with Numpy & Pandas-Learn to import, manipulate and visualize data
  • Learn and apply different types of testing and analysis to bio-related & medical dataset
  • Learn and apply Linux command line basics
Molecular Biology - Prerequisite course
  • Sufficient understanding of genetics and molecular biology
  • Recognition of the biological concepts and terms needed in bioinformatics, such as genes, proteins, DNA, RNA, and so on.

Phase II: Core Courses

Bioinformatics I: Broad foundation of the essentials
  • The ability to locate bioinformatic data and information in public resources
  • Performing basic statistical analysis for biological problems
  • Performing gene expression clustering analysis
  • Performing gene enrichment analysis
  • Performing differential expression analysis
Bioinformatics II: Next-generation sequencing deep dive
  • Hands-on analysis of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data from raw format, (WGS) and RNA-seq data
  • Visualization of genomes and genomic tracks in the genome browser
Bioinformatics III: An outlook over advanced topics
  • Understanding of the drug discovery pipeline and the role of bioinformatics in it
  • Appreciation of the value, scope, and power of integrating clinical data with omic data
  • Recognition of the special analysis applicable to collections of genomes (e.g. meta-genomics)
  • Acknowledgement of the power and application of the collective analysis of multiple omic datasets

Phase III: Capstone Project

15 credits
Real-world project

Participants will be required to put the theoretical and practical skills that they learned in a final project in which they will analyze real biological data. This will be a good chance to incorporate different bioinformatic concepts learned throughout the course in a single project serving a real purpose.

I'm not experienced at programming, can I apply?

You don't need to be knowledgeable in any programming language (otherwise it's a plus). Once you enroll in this training program, you will get free access to the Datacamp platform to learn the preliminaries of coding in Python. Your mentor will meet you in a live session weekly to check your progress. Remember, the more practicing you do, the faster at scale you will set apart in this job market.

Can I skip a certain course?

Not exactly, you can only waive courses in the initial phase (prerequisites kit). We recommend you to apply and join these foundational courses, to learn the basic components before digging deep into the advanced level since the whole curriculum is designed following the synoptic methodology so you are allowed to waive these courses upon your responsibility if the submitted documents met the criteria.
